Helena Dowling is a British Actress, Singer and Dancer. It was clear from a young age that she was destined to be a performer, as she would always entertain friends and family under duress with little ‘plays’. Eventually to occupy her and exhaust some of her boundless energy she was sent to class and her passion for acting, singing and dancing was born.
As a professional she has studied at the Identity School of Acting – in Laban for actors, improvisation and comedy amongst other acting styles.
She began her professional training on scholarship at the Laban Centre studying Ballet, Graham and Horton and Cunningham techniques, something she has found incredibly useful for acting. She then gained another scholarship and BA Hons in Musical Theatre at London Studio Centre. Here she specialised in acting, jazz and street dance styles and pop, rock, musical theatre and soul vocal techniques. On graduating, initially, she worked extensively in the commercial dance world, dancing for artists such as Kylie Minogue and JLS and Tinie Tempah.
She beat thousands of hopefuls to play series lead ‘Flo’ in Channel 4’s ‘Totally Frank’. The comedy drama TV series ‘Totally Frank’ was cult viewing on E4 Sundays and ran for 26 episodes. Helena was nominated for a Screen Nation award for her role. The show was commissioned by Initial and also included a recording contract with Polydor records. She recorded an album as part of girl band ‘Frank’, singing, writing and playing keyboards on the album ‘Devils Got your Gold’. Frank supported Girls Aloud on their ‘Biology Tour’.
She played Tina’s best friend in ‘Soul Sister’, The Tina Turner musical that was nominated for an Olivier Award as ‘Best New Musical’. She has also toured Germany in musicals, ‘Break every Rule’, another Tina Turner inspired musical and ’27 Club’.
She joined the Pet Shop Boys on their ‘Pandemonium’ World Tour as a singer and dancer for 2 years and loved singing a duet with Neil Tennant. Gigs included Glastonbury, Sonar festival and opening the first Prada store in Beijing. When PSB supported Take That on their progress tour she performed in front of 90 000 people at a sold out Wembley Stadium.
She appears as lead Sophie in short C.T.R.L. Most recently it screened as an official selection for the BFI London Film Festival. This year is the first time the festival has ever had a shorts programme.
A diverse and exciting performer, Helena takes her craft very seriously and absolutely loves being on stage.
